The Moendivells, being lesser lords, were largely spared the wrath visited upon the Vanderodes when their ambitions cast them down low. In time, as Lady Saralleine was able to gather the tatters of her prestige back into some semblance of respectability, she was deemed a suitable chaperone for the young members of the house for the social seasons in Tar Valon. It is also believed that Lady Ellisaene and Lord Rolaen had secret directions from their grandfather to learn all they could while under Saralleine's roof so that they could further use it to their advantage should Vanderode seem ripe for the picking.
While in Tar Valon, Rolaen has continued his military education, taking classes and training from his uncle, Lord Benjaen, who is the Lord Commandant of the Vanderode forces in his sister's name, as well as attending classes taught by the master gaidin in the Warder Academy. Largely indifferent to the city's famed season of balls and promenades, he nonetheless attends many events, seeking both a few amorous dalliances as well gathering intelligence. To all appearances, an earnest and honorable young officer, he maintains a coded correspondence with her wily grandfather, reporting an all of Lady Saralleine's activities.
In his time in Tar Valon, Rolaen has had a few questionable romantic entanglements, notably with Silayne Isebaine, the captain of her trading vessel, Caselle Sanovar, a member of the adventursome Peregrines and Belaan din Amatar White Marlin of the Sea Folk. Rolaen soon aquired a comapny of close associates and friends, including Kirun Asgeld and the brothers Eral and Aron Halenne.
Among his own relations, Rolaen prefers to remain close to his sister Ellisaene, while keeping a watchful on his Vanderode cousins.
